1906-S U.S. $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle Denomination: $5 (Half Eagle) Mint: San Francisco (“S” mintmark) Designer: Christian Gobrecht Composition: 90% Gold, 10% Copper Fineness: .900 Actual Gold Weight (AGW): 0.2419 troy oz Weight: 8.359 grams Diameter: 21.6 mm Obverse: Features Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1906 below. Reverse: Displays a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, holding arrows and an olive branch, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above, denomination FIVE DOLLARS below, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircling. The mintmark S (San Francisco) appears below the eagle. Historical Significance: Part of the long-running Liberty Head Half Eagle series (1839–1908). The 1906-S is among the later issues struck before being replaced by the Indian Head design in 1908.
